Softbills are non-parrot species with specialized diets and unique personalities. Unlike parrots, they don't crack hard seeds — instead they thrive on fruit, insects, and softbill pellets. At VCM Bird Land, we carry some of the most exotic and beautiful softbill species available.

Toucans

Toucans are among the most visually stunning birds on the planet. With their oversized, colorful bills and playful demeanor, toucans are unlike any other pet bird. These softbill birds have unique dietary and care requirements that set them apart from parrots.

At VCM Bird Land, we can help you understand what it takes to care for these extraordinary birds and determine if a toucan is the right fit for your home.

PersonalityCurious, playful, and surprisingly affectionate. Toucans are active birds that love to hop, explore, and toss objects with their bills. They bond well with patient owners.
Noise LevelLow to moderate. Toucans make croaking, purring, and barking sounds but are generally quieter than parrots. They do not talk or mimic speech.
SizeMedium to large (12–25 inches depending on species). They need spacious flight cages or aviaries — toucans hop and bounce rather than climb like parrots.
Lifespan15–20+ years in captivity with proper diet and care. Toucans are sensitive to iron storage disease, so diet management is critical.
DietSpecialized low-iron softbill pellets, fresh tropical fruits (papaya, berries, grapes, melon), and insects. No citrus — it increases iron absorption.
Best ForExperienced bird enthusiasts looking for a unique, non-parrot companion with specialized dietary needs.

Persian Turacos

The Persian Turaco (also known as the White-cheeked Turaco) is one of the most breathtaking softbill species in aviculture. With vibrant green plumage, striking crimson flight feathers, and an elegant crest, these birds are living works of art. Their unique pigmentation — turacoverdin and turacin — are found nowhere else in the animal kingdom.

Turacos are active, social birds that do best in spacious aviaries where they can fly and hop between perches. At VCM Bird Land, we're proud to carry these rare and beautiful birds.

PersonalityActive, social, and inquisitive. Turacos are energetic birds that enjoy flying and hopping. They can become tame with regular, gentle handling but are more observational than cuddly.
Noise LevelModerate. Turacos have a distinctive "go-away" call and various coos and barks. They're generally quieter than parrots but can be vocal in the morning and evening.
SizeMedium (16–18 inches including tail). They are active flyers and need a spacious aviary or large flight cage rather than a standard parrot cage.
Lifespan10–15+ years in captivity with proper care and diet. Like toucans, they are susceptible to iron storage disease and require careful dietary management.
DietLow-iron softbill pellets, a wide variety of fresh fruits (bananas, grapes, papaya, berries), leafy greens, and occasional insects. Avoid citrus fruits and high-iron foods.
Best ForBird enthusiasts who appreciate exotic beauty and have space for an aviary setup. Great for those who enjoy watching active, graceful birds in a naturalistic environment.
